Nikola Tesla, a Genius Ahead of His Time

‍Nikola Tesla was a renowned inventor, engineer and physicist. He is most famous for his work with electricity and magnetism in the 1880s. He developed new alternating current (AC) electrical generators as well as the first AC motor. Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856, in modern-day Croatia but at the time it was part of the Austrian Empire. His father, who considered him to be a gifted child from a young age, bought him books about mathematics and mechanics. At just 20 years old he won a scholarship to the University of Strasbourg to study electrical engineering. His inventions include an electric motor that runs on alternate current as opposed to direct current, an efficient means of generating and transmitting electricity.

Early Life

The life of Nikola Tesla began in the town of Smiljan, now part of Croatia. He was born on July 10, 1856, to an Orthodox priest and his wife. He had one brother, who died in infancy, and one sister. His father was a schoolteacher and the minister of a small church in the nearby village of Gospić. When Tesla was five years old, he began to exhibit signs of genius. His father noticed that he had an unusual ability to understand and manipulate things, so he bought him a set of mechanical tools. He used these to build all sorts of things, such as a boat, a windmill and a mechanical bird that flapped its wings. He also devoured books on a wide range of topics, including mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics and astronomy.
